VI-HPS Tuning Workshop

This workshop,  organized jointly by VI-HPS, LRZ and IT4Innovations at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) in Garching, continues the series of recognized VI-HPS Tuning Workshops of the Virtual Institute – High Productivity Supercomputing (VI-HPS). Around 30 participants receive instruction and guidance applying VI-HPS tools to their own parallel application codes, along with advice for potential corrections and optimizations. Feedback to tools developers also helps direct tools development to user needs, as well as improve tool documentation and ease of use.

Coordinated tools training material is available with emphasis on hands-on exercises using VI-HPS tools individually and interoperably. Exercises with example MPI and MPI+OpenMP parallel applications can be configured to run on dedicated HPC compute resources or within the virtual environment provided by a free Linux Live ISO that can be booted and run on an x86_64 notebook or desktop computer.

The workshop will give an overview of the VI-HPS programming tools suite, explain the functionality of individual tools, and how to use them effectively, and offer hands-on experience and expert assistance using the tools

  • Scalasca automated trace analysis
  • TAU performance system
  • Vampir interactive trace analysis
  • Periscope/PTF automated performance analysis and optimisation
  • Extra-P automated performance modeling
  • Paraver/Extrae/Dimemas trace analysis and performance prediction
  • [k]cachegrind cache utilisation analysis
  • MAQAO performance analysis & optimisation
  • MUST runtime error detection for MPI
  • ARCHER runtime error detection for OpenMP
  • JUBE script-based workflow execution environment

Registration and Fees

Obligatory registration via the PRACE Events Portal.

For participants from public research institutions in PRACE countries, the  course is free of charge (the course fee is sponsored through the PRACE PATC programme). All participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation.
