Computational science and engineering communities develop complex applications to solve scientific and engineering challenges. These applications have many moving parts that need to interoperate with one another. The accuracy and reliability of results produced by the scientific software depends not only on the individual components behaving correctly, but also on the validity of their interactions. Therefore, a rigorous software process is a critical requirement for scientific productivity using such software.

Productivity tools for High Performance Computing (PTC course)

Annotation

This HPC training aims to expand skills and knowledge in using productivity tools and technologies, to quickly build up an efficient HPC user environment, from scratch, without admin rights. We shall demonstrate tools and procedures tailored to the Salomon or Anselm clusters, however they are rapidly replicable on any HPC system.

Collecting and understanding performance and efficiency characteristics of applications is key for High Performance Computing. During this one day course with hands-on you will be equipped with advanced information about performance and efficiency metrics and how to easily obtain them using selected Intel tools. GASPI - Global Address Space Programming Interface

Annotation

In this tutorial we present an asynchronous data flow programming model for Partitioned Global Address Spaces (PGAS) as an alternative to the programming model of MPI. GASPI, which stands for Global Address Space Programming Interface, is a partitioned global address space API. The GASPI API is designed as a C/C++/Fortran library and focused on three key objectives: scalability, flexibility and fault tolerance.

Intel MIC Programming Workshop

Annotation

The course discusses Intel’s Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture. It covers various programming and optimisation techniques for Intel  Xeon Phi coprocessors. We will mainly focus on the KNC version of the chip. The hands-on sessions are done on the Intel Xeon Phi based Salomon system at the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center.

The afternoon of the second day will be devoted to a plenum session (see below) with invited talks about Intel Xeon Phi experience on Salomon.

The Portable Extensible Toolkit for Scientific computing (PETSc) is a modular library for linear algebra, non-linear solvers, time integrators, optimization, and spatial discretization. Applications built on top of PETSc can be used on a laptop as well as supercomputer with no code changes.

Performance Optimization and Productivity Tutorial

Annotation

The EU funded Performance Optimization and Productivity Centre of Excellence (POP) offers services in the area of performance analysis and performance optimization. Therefore, POP mainly uses performance analysis tools developed by POP partners, namely Extrae, Paraver, Dimemas, Score-P, Cube and Scalasca. These tools are used to generate uniform performance audits for parallel applications to provide a good overview of the applications execution.

Practical Parallel Performance Analysis on Salomon

Annotation

Applications need to be effectively parallelised, using techniques such as MPI message-passing and OpenMP multithreading, to fully exploit the capabilities of modern systems for high-performance computing. The course introduces the open-source community-developed Score-P instrumentation and measurement infrastructure, and the Scalasca and Vampir tools, to provide a practical basis for portable performance analysis of parallel applications.
